Worldbuilding Fantasy: Creating Magical Worlds

This course will provide a roadmap for crafting a fantastic world. Unlike other worldbuilding courses, students will dive into the purpose of magic systems, cultural and physical settings, and their impact on the story. Students will also learn how to utilize a series bible and the tools available to develop a magical world.

A few more words about this course

The course will provide opportunities to begin the draft of a worldbuilding a magical world as well as reflection and deep thinking around crafting a fantastic world with depth, responsibility, and awe by reviewing articles from anthropology, psychology, and sociology.
Students will learn:
  • Building fantasy maps
  • The difference between cultural Appropriation and cultural appreciation
  • How to create social norms, ornaments, symbols and religion for the fantasy world.
  • How to create a magic system for a fantasy world.

Nicole Givens Kurtz

Author, Educator, and Publisher
Nicole Givens Kurtz is an author, editor, and educator. She's the recipient of the Horror Writers Association's Diversity Grant and the Atomacon Palmetto Scribe Award-Best Short Story 2021. She's also the editor of the groundbreaking anthology, SLAY: Stories of the Vampire Noire. Her novels have been a finalist in the Dream Realm Awards, Fresh Voices, and EPPIE Awards for science fiction. Nicole has over 40 short stories published as well as numerous novels and three active speculative mystery series. She's a member of Horror Writers Association, Sisters in Crime, and Science Fiction Writers of America.
